WINDSOR – Prosecutors in the murder trial of Antwan Pittman heard testimony from nine witnesses Wednesday morning and questioned the investigating detective twice before the lunch recess.
Assistant District Attorney Bill Wolfe called several experts who testified that Pittman’s DNA was mixed with that of the victim, Taraha Shenice Nicholson, on a vaginal swab.
Nicholson’s body was found by hunters on March 7, 2009, in the woods along Marriott Farm Road. Medical examiners testified Tuesday that evidence indicated Nicholson had had sex within 24 hours before her death.
Further testimony on Wednesday from a DNA analyst indicated Pittman’s DNA was not conclusively found on her clothing or anywhere else on Nicholson.
“So the defendant put his sperm in her, but his DNA was not on the underwear next to her,” Wolfe asked Sharon Hinton, an analyst with the State Bureau of Investigation.
“Correct,” Hinton replied.
Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Gene Harrell testified he executed a search warrant at Pittman’s house in August 2009 and seized a computer and other items.
Despite an objection by Pittman’s attorney, Tom Sallenger, an SBI digital analyst testified that he found on Pittman’s computer a brief rape video located in Pittman’s digital recycling bin. The video showed a man forcefully grab a woman, throw her seemingly unconscious body on a bed, fondle and touch her, then remove her clothing.
Sallenger questioned Analyst Mark Schlitter about how long the three files containing the video were on the computer before the user deleted the files. Schlitter checked his records and testified there was less than a minute from the time each of the files were created to the time the files were put in the recycle bin.
Schlitter also testified he found multiple rape-related internet searches along with news articles related to Nicholson’s death.
After Schlitter’s testimony, prosecutors called Pittman’s aunt, Karen Pittman, to the stand who testified she showed investigators two former homes of the defendant near where Nicholson’s body was found.
The prosecution planned to continue its case at 1:30 p.m.
