CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has arrested a man who they say killed his 82-year-old mother more than two years ago.

Irwin Jay Feldman, 58, was arrested Thursday and charged with murder, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Major Cam Selvey told local media.

Feldman initially told police that he found the body of his mother, Ina Feldman, on the morning of Feb. 4, 2014 in her south Charlotte townhouse. Ina Feldman had been strangled and beaten to death.

In recent weeks, Selvey said investigators developed probable cause that linked Irwin Feldman to the killing. Police called him into the station for an interview Thursday, and arrested him afterward.

Selvey would not release a motive in the killing, or explain why it took two years to arrest a suspect. Authorities also would not identify the key piece of evidence that led to Feldman’s arrest.

In the aftermath of Ina Feldman’s death, the seemingly random slaying had put residents on edge, with neighborhood leaders holding meetings and officers conducting free security assessments of the homes on the street.

On Thursday, Selvey tried to put those fears to rest.

“There is no reason for that community to be afraid of any sort of random violence,” he said. “We have made an arrest, and unfortunately, it was her son. It is a known suspect in this case.”

It was not immediately clear if Irwin Feldman has an attorney.
