Rocky Mount Mail Processing Facility

A recent press release by the office of Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) announced that he had 'sent a letter to United States Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe opposing the proposed closure of the Rocky Mount, North Carolina Mail Processing facility. In his letter, Butterfield wrote that the closure would not only disrupt the livelihood of the 182 employees who work at the facility, but also create a major inconvenience since it services a heavily traveled route.'

Rep. Butterfield is a day late and dollar short. The US Postal Service is in dire straights to the tune of over $5 billion. So what has Butterfield done to help these employees in our district? Since he took office in 2004, he has proposed over fourteen name changes for post offices in the district to honor people. While not an undue hardship to the postal service to erect a commemorative plaque for someone to be honored, it still costs the taxpayer to make it happen.

If complaining about a situation solved problems, Butterfield would have solved this one. We need someone who is fiscally responsible with taxpayer money and continually looks to save. Send Rep. Butterfield a clear message on May 8th that he is the problem in Washington not the answer.

Transparency in Political Spending Builds Investor Confidence

Thank you to Congressman G.K. Butterfield for being the first NC co-sponsor of the recently proposed Shareholder Protection Act. Among other things, this bill requires companies to disclose their political spending to their shareholders. In the wake of an ongoing economic crisis brought on by loopholes in banking regulation that were “bought” from lawmakers by wealthy special interests; and as undisclosed political “investment” from corporations ramps up following a licentious U.S. Supreme Court ruling, it is critical that shareholders have, at the very least, knowledge of political spending. Aside from increasing evidence that political spending by corporations is actually negatively correlated with increased profit and market value (Dr. Michael Hadani, Long Island University, comments to the Securities and Exchange Commission), undisclosed political spending can stifle entrepreneurship and deter small businesses who feel powerless to compete in an uneven playing field. This is not partisan. It is about encouraging investors to exercise their responsibility to monitor and protect their portfolios.

Spring String Extravaganza

We do not have children, or grandchildren, in the public schools. However, we did have the pleasure of attending the Spring String Extravaganza yesterday afternoon at the Dunn Center. The event was sponsored by Benvenue and Nashville Elementary Schools. This county is so fortunate to have a School Superintendent and School Board that supports such an extraordinary program. Mrs. Frances Nowell, Program Director, is amazing!!!!! We have so many talented children that may not have been exposed to the beauty and wonder of a violin or a cello if it were not for this program. The difference that the music of Frost, Beethoven, Bach and yes, even Lenon and McCartney are making in the lives of these young people is impossible to measure. We hope and pray that our State legislators will think long and hard before they make devastating cuts to public education that could possible cut out programs like this. Support the ARTS and support these precious talented children. Keep up the great work and thanks to everyone who make this program a reality. Mrs. Nowell...... as the children would say..... "YOU ROCK!"

Sanderson Farms Plant

I was not invited to the plant tour in Georgia recently to get a first hand look and feel of a modern poultry processing plant. I can only believe that it was like the paper mills that are scattered about. Everyday is not a stench day at these type plants. Case in point, Roanoke Rapids. What I would like to suggest to the Nash County Commissioners and others that are in favor of this, take a little ride to Lewiston NC 2 or 3 days in row. There is a Perdue processing plant there that will take the very breath from your body. My husband and I were there 2 years ago looking at some mobile homes for sale. The smell was beyond horrible. We were 3 miles from the plant. All we could think of, is how do people live here? If you think a paper mill smells bad, "you aint seen nuttin yet". I dont know how to begin to describe how bad it was. Imagine a decomposed body with rotten fish heads in the sun for several days. I realize that is an intense and graphic description. It was an intence and graphic smell. I came home and took a breathing treatment, which is rare for me. I am skeptical also of the reported wages they will be paying. At starting pays of over $11 an hour, every Perdue worker for miles around will want to transfer. Between the chicken houses of Sandy Cross and the UNKNOWN fertilizer that is used on Sapony Creek Road field, there is plenty of STENCH in southern Nash County. If I am wrong, I would hate to know that I passed up good employment that is needed. However, someone needs to tell me how Perdue of Lewiston and Sanderson Farms are so different. Anyone that doubts the validity of my claim, PLEASE feel free to take a little road trip to Lewiston. You will never feel the saem way about chicken plants. Someone please send me a notice on how to join the fight against this.

Additional info on firing a productive worker

After receiving additional information, the lady that was fired, stated that the person that interrogated her, wanted her to say that an inmate told her about his crime, the inmate in question is in jail for allegations of killing someone. Now, the person that interrogated her is a officer of the law, why did he want this young lady to break the law, by comprising the evidence. He also stated to the young lady if she didn't say it, he would let her job know she was a liar, take in mind, he didn't know her character. She was fired. The young lady sister approach Mr. H. about the incident, she told him that her sister was fired as a result of his input. He stated to her, the young lady got herself fired. Now, are we stupid? In these critical times who can afford the luxury of losing their job, plus this young lady is battling breast cancer. Is this the type of people we want to represent us? There were two officers in the room with her when she was being interrogated. Mr.H treated this person as a thug on the street, trying to get her to comprised her conscience by lying about an inmate, that she didn't know anything about. He also tried to bully her by saying inmates were paying her bills, now, this young lady work two jobs, just to make ends meet. Now, think about, if by chance, they can get someone to lie, there are hundredths that know her from different background and ethnicity that will stand up for her character.
Now, the case of the poor family who child was killed the evidence has been comprised due to the unprofessional of our so called trusted official, there are to many good officers to let one greedy person go unpunished. If you are criminal officers, you know who you are, this was a crime, telling someone to lie, also, this comprised the evidence, what would the judge say about this kind of methods. I don't know you Mr. H. but I do know the young lady in question. If this happen this time I'm sure there are other complaints. Now, if you get a history of complaints against you Mr. H someone will surely listen. This tells me, this is a practice from you.
The officer should lose his job. The young lady never been in any trouble with the law, no record.
People stop this "madness this happen everywhere but is swept under the rug.
If this type of thing happen to you will you close your mouth or speak out. Aint (slang) this what America stands for, the freedom of speech. Not slandering someone name but speaking the truth. Well, indeed "The truth will set YOU Free." I'm sorry for the family of the victim. If you want to call this allegations Mr. H, whatever, but you know, the other officer knows and lastly, the young lady in question knows the truth.

Firing a productive Worker

Sadly, I was informed that a young lady was fired from Nash's County Jail. What suprised me was she was called in for interrogation at the Police Dept. Shortly after, she received words that she no longer had a job. Now, what do America represent? It suppose to be a place where the highest regards of freedom is implemented and exercised. Now, if officers could call her in after years of services, calling her a liar, now take in mind, neither the officers knew her as a person or her integrity as an individual. Her words didn't mean a thing, no why, to convict a person, they will walk on all the toes in the name of justice. Is that acceptable? we should ask, Is that justice? This person in question is battling "Breast Cancer", now unemployed from her main job, she has no means of footing the bills regarding her health situations. Now, a lot of people know this individual, to attack her, their are so many to counter the attack. Really, people, some of the prosecutors and officers should be held accountable for their actions. There are so many people complaining about the very same thing. We as a Black race have to fight so hard for justice. It's a fact, this is something we don't have the luxury of overcoming until this World finally see us as human being.
This person worked to hard to go down without a fight, now, how would you like someone to call you a liar who does'nt know you, it has happened to me so many times, it hurts but the "Truth always come out"
There are so many outstanding officers and prosecutors, but the ones that are greedy for power are not acceptable. I thank the ones that daily put their lives on the line. But there are to many trying to make a name for themselves off the back of the innocent.

There is something wrong here

I would like to express my opinion about the incident and reporting practices with the Halifax County Public School System especially with Southeast Halifax High School. In a faculty meeting last year, it was stated by the former Principal Tonya Mewborn that Southeast Halifax High School was 426 out of 426 in the State Of North Carolina in student test scores. Last school year, a student threw a steel magnetic clip with enough force to cause extensive damage to my right wrist, which I had surgery on August 25, 2010. I followed protocol by filing my paperwork in a timely manner and waited for my workers compensation claim to be approved; however, my claim was disapproved by the insurance carrier (Corvel) for the school district. I don’t understand why my claim was denied? First of all on the date of my injury: the principal, the crisis intervention officer, and another administrator were out of the building. One of the assistant principals sent an email to all the teachers called, “Operation Pull Together”-which stated that all teachers need to be alert and to assist the substitute teachers in the building to keep the students out of the hall way and if any student are tardy-they shall be placed in school suspension. However, students arrived at my classroom seven minutes past the tardy bell and that is where the assault took place. When the student was questioned about the assault, he replied, “You told me to hit her- don’t act like you don’t know now” and this statement was directed to Assistant Principal Whitaker. I had to wait one week to see a non effective hand surgeon from Roanoke Rapids, who allowed me to return to work under the influence of Vicodin, other narcotics, and my wrist placed in a cast. I was told by the former Principal Tonya Mewborn not to work because of the narcotics and she did not want my arm to be reinjured and she promised to me to place this in writing, so that I can report this to the North Carolina Industrial Commission. As for the statement by Assistant Principal Whitaker, he has been known to bribe students with a biscuit breakfast from Hardees, candy, and canned drinks from the faculty lounge- which he did actually state in a faculty meeting. In order for the students to get the rewards, they must do specific favors: Some students record teachers with their cellular phones either by video or audio and report to Assistant Principal Whitaker. Not only, were they for the assistant principal but also for their amusement because the male students were taking pictures of the female teacher’s rear ends. Speaking of teachers being recorded, there was an event when the former Principal at Southeast Halifax was video recorded in a verbal confrontation with another female student and trying to escalate the incident into a physical confrontation.
Southeast Halifax High School has a zero tolerance for electronic devices on the school campus but they allowed certain and privileged students free reign to go undercover and report back to the Assistant Principal Whitaker. Several teachers have spoke about this in faculty meetings because they were in fear of their jobs, which is documented by the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey. Some of the teachers at Southeast Halifax High School are a wonderful group of people who strive for excellence for the children; however, the administration did recruit new teachers from outside the district and since they are not part of the clique they are shunned by the faculty and it creates a state of depression among the new teachers. Think about it, these teachers relocate not only to get a steady job, attempt to make an earnest living, but to enjoy enriching the lives of the students. I am not saying that all teachers and students are bad at Southeast Halifax High School but some of the new teachers are not part of the family traditional clique. Therefore, you are forced to be silent if you want to keep your job and substitute teachers are told if you say anything, they will get rid of you. So I can imagine what the good honest teachers are going through.
