Rocky Mount High’s Mackenzie Warner overcame a foot injury to win the Big East Conference singles’ championship last week in Wilson.

Warner, the No. 3 singles player for the Gryphons, beat the top players from Wilson Hunt and Northern Nash, to earn the title.

“She was so mentally tough, as tough as any kid I think I have ever coached,” Rocky Mount coach Barry Nethercutt said. “She never let anyone know how much her foot was hurting, and she played through some fatigue that I didn’t think she was going to be able to do.”

Warner highlighted the start of the most important stretch of the season – the playoffs. Rocky Mount High will travel to West Carteret on Tuesday for the first round of the state playoffs, while undefeated Nash Central visits Pikeville Aycock.

The Bulldogs also had their share of success in the conference tournament. Randi and Kaley Price won the doubles title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against teammates Caley Bass and Dana Kelly in the finals.

Both squads will advance to Friday’s 3-A regional tournament at Barton College, as will the doubles team of Elizabeth Thompson and Caroline Bell (Rocky Mount High) and Karla Flores and Casey Strickland (Southern Nash).

Regional qualifiers in singles action include Warner and Katie
Beaman (Northern Nash).
